Rural Roots

Rural Roots Synopsis

by Trudy Handel and Bernice Neff

How many of us still remember those days on the farm, sitting in a warm kitchen, drinking cocoa after a day out playing in the snow?  The smell of fresh cooked buns hung in the air, making our mouths water. We knew that before they were really cool, we'd have a warm bun, drizzling with melted butter and homemade jam.  Those memories are the basis for our program, Rural Roots.

In a world where the next meal is prepackaged, frozen or dried, Rural Roots attempts to bring the viewer back to the basics.  By combining our exploration of the new farm entrepreneur with our great recipes, we will encourage people to cook with pure, unique ingredients.

Rural Roots will take you to some of the most intriguing farms in the country, those that grow for the  "farm gate".  We'll explore the newest form of agriculture - those rural entrepreneurs who cater to the "gourmet" in all of us, growing their produce and making finished products right on their farm.

Join us as we travel from cottage farm industries to cheese factories, from herb farms to custom greenhouses.  Each of these places have one thing in common - they grow or produce some of the very best ingredients available.

Our host, Bernice Neff, is a long time farmer in addition to being an expert gourmet  chef.  Travel with Bernice and friends as they visit "behind the scenes" at a wide variety of farms, then join us in Bernice's unique farm kitchen, where she'll take the ingredients and produce yet another wonderful dish.

Our series combines, warmth, country charm and gourmet recipes to appeal to that country chef in all of us.  Each episode starts with a visit to a unique farm and a tour of their facilities.  Whether we are touring a dairy or helping pick herbs in a field, you'll be right there.  Then we'll join our farm hosts as they process their "farm gate products".

But we've left the best for last - we will take the finished farm gate products back to Bernice's country kitchen, where we'll create a gourmet delight, sure to please your most exacting guests.

And maybe there'll be a tray of buns, warm from the oven, with a a drizzle of butter and a jar of fresh jam.

Join us at Rural Roots.
